Welcome to Berkshire Compost, a small, woman-owned composting business proudly serving Southern Berkshire County. We provide residential households with convenient 5-gallon compost buckets, which we pick up weekly, as well as commercial compost pickup services.

Our Mission
To keep food waste out of the landfills and to return the nutrients back into the local soil. We work to close the food cycle- to propose there is an additional step to the Farm to Table Movement : Farm to Table to Farm!

Melissa Beeson Higgins, Owner & Founder
Like many others in the Berkshire community, Melissa has always looked to practice sustainability through renewable energy and zero-waste—including home composting of course!
Melissa heard a story about a woman who started a composting pilot program in Vermont that had such great success it was launched as a business. She then connected with the woman who was very encouraging and inspiring. Melissa thought if it can work in Vermont, it can work here especially given the Berkshires already has an eco-friendly community interested in making improvements for the environment.
She then took a course on composting that emphasized the importance and power of composting not only lies in preventing landfills from being overfilled and limiting greenhouse gas emissions, but that through composting we can create nutrient rich soil for local farms.
Having recognized the growing need for an accessible and eco-conscious waste management system in her community and with inspiration from other compost initiatives and local women-owned businesses, Melissa founded Berkshire Compost in 2019. Her goal is to make composting easy, efficient, and beneficial for everyone—from residents and businesses to local farms.
She is continuing to grow Berkshire Compost, driven by the simple yet profound idea: each of us can make a small change and together have a huge impact.
